FIELD NOTES / OCTOBER 18, 2026

You don’t have to be good at it to enjoy it

A few simple ideas to help you start, enjoy the moment, and finish on your own terms.

Lower the size of the assignment

“Make art” is a large request. “Give a paperclip a museum label” is a small one. Tiny constraints make a starting point visible. Choose a task you can finish in ten minutes, with materials you already have. The result does not need to be posted, sold, evaluated, or saved. You are making an experience for yourself.

Borrow a rule, not somebody’s work

Use a constraint such as only circles, five objects, or a story in six sentences. Create your own subject and wording. In Pocket museum, everyday objects become an exhibition because you notice and describe them differently. In Tiny invention, a small inconvenience becomes a sketch. If you use someone else’s work as a reference, respect their rights and avoid presenting it as your own.

Let the first version be strange

Try making three quick versions before choosing one. A strange first idea can reveal what you actually like about the second. You can change the goal midway: a serious drawing can become a comic, and an awkward sentence can become a character’s voice. There is no requirement to transform every experiment into a polished project.

Finish with one specific observation

Instead of rating the whole result as good or bad, notice a detail: a funny title, an unexpected shape, or a sentence you would not have written yesterday. That detail gives the next experiment a starting point. Stop when your chosen time is up and return later only if you want to. Play can remain small.
